Fun in the sun :P

It's funny, but as we grow up we seem to let go of so many of the simple things that bring us joy as children without even realising it.

I was paging through one of these free mall magazine handouts that we're all accosted with these days to pass the time between two appointments the other day when I came across an article by the editor of said handout about an outing she and her family took to a place not far out of Joburg for a picnic, yes a PICNIC. When last did you hear of anyone in this day and age actually going on a picnic? There are after all SO many things to think about least of which is the safety of yourself and your family, crime is after all rampant in our city :( But I digress.

This article got me thinking about how while I was growing up picnics where a regular feature on our social agenda, and no I don't mean formal, planned, family outings, I mean spur of the moment "mom, I'm going on a picnic" picnics and it didn't matter if I had an apple and a peanut butter sarmie and went and sat somewhere alone or if we went as a larger group and played at potluck, picnic's where fun. I used to spend hours relaxing that way in nature, cloud watching, bird watching, people watching, basically just watching the world go by lost in my own world if I went alone and the group outings well, they where perfect playing games and good old fashioned fun and as we got older the games changed but the constant remained that fun in the sun attitude. They even took on a romantic tone occasionally with moonlit picnics for 2.

But then suddenly things changed, we got to busy, to old, to a million other excuses why we couldn't go on picnics anymore.

Funny thing though is I developed my own sort of ritual a "bednic"which even today I still use as a pick me up when I'm down and sometimes just because I can and it's basically just a picnic on my bed. Cant remember how it started I guess I just missed the innocence and freedom of that part of growing up and that's why I still do it today even if it did evolve to suit my life a little more.

Me thinks it's time to take this back outside back into nature though and I will be taking myself and some friends off to Nkwe asap for a proper outdoor picnic, ants and all. :)

If you're looking for somewhere close by have a look at www.nkwepark.co.za and we may just see you there :)
